Romance (boarders right around the edges of romance and young adult)
Blurb:
The end of the world didn't come from a nuke bomb or natural disaster. Society's downfall came from ruthless and bloodthirsty vampires.
Survival became priority number one.
Preston Mitchell is fighting to survive after the loss of his family. He is coming of age in a world ruled by evil night creatures.
A chance encounter brings him to Darcy Rose and her family farm. She is also a teen living on her own. Because of her, Preston learns the true meaning of determination, love, and what it takes to be a man.
I gave it five out of five stars.
First thing that caught my attention was the words "free" on a link. Couldn't resist it and I must admit that I had some doubts...
The cover art is nice but nothing that just jumped at me. The title is also simple and pretty bland, yet it is right to the point so I suppose it makes sense.
The book is set in a vampire apocalypse theme in which you experience everything through a young man's eyes. Preston had to grow up pretty fast when the vampires took over and forced his family to flee into a cave. Running along the lines of an 'apocalypse' I would have been disappoint if everything came easy for him... Thankfully the author seemed to understand that.
I was captivated by the first page and couldn't stop until about 46% when I desperately craved a cigarette.
Preston went through many tough days, lost a few loved ones, and through it all kept hope that there would be a better day ahead. I was taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions where his pain and joy became my own. I couldn't help but to fall in love with him as he learned to grow up quickly to protect the ones dear to him. Darcy was a delight, always keeping that hope alive despite the darker look of their new reality. She was sweet, loving, and a character I really cherished. And the twists! It was sheer brilliance!
There is some romance but my non-perverts can rest easy, nothing goes into deep detail. ;)
To sum it all up without bursting into a spoiler rampage; An amazing story that would be well worth the original cost- $2.99- and seriously defines the phrase 'don't judge a book by it's cover'.
I loved it and will be buying more of her work as soon as I can!
(Update, the cover has been changed to something more appealing though I do not have the image to share.)
