My opinion on sell outs...

Independent publishing is truly an amazing thing. No longer are authors restricted by guidelines and time limits to complete their work of art. Everything is in their hands and the creative control has been empowering to millions. Someone who thought they would never be able to publish now can through supportive websites like Amazon, itunes, Barnes and Noble, and smashwords for as little or as much money as they want. They can write whatever they would like without someone turning them down through a piece of paper in the mail or agreeing to the manuscript but later butchering it because it was "too big" or had "too much steam" in it. However, as with everything in life, this choice has its flaws. The community isn't perfect, we experience cyber bullying near daily.
Authors can turn against fellow authors. Bloggers against fellow bloggers. Readers stuck in-between pointless battles that suddenly emerged because someone said something rude and hateful on the internet. One of the latest issues I have seen pop up has me both confused and annoyed. Ladies and gentlemen if you have not heard this before around the indie world let me introduce to you- selling out.
Sell outs.
Whatever you want to say.

Now writing can be classified into three categories: a passion, a hobby, and a business. Yes you can mix the three but let me explain myself a little more first...

*A passion is needed for any sort of art to flow gracefully from the mind of the artist. But typically those who are ONLY passionate do this in their free time and only share it among their friends or family. Sure, one day they may take it to the next level and allow the public eye to view it as well but the passionate artist isn't ready for that leap yet.

*A hobby is something done on the side that usually isn't sold. An artist who looks at their writing as a hobby may take those pieces of work and publishing them on free reading websites so the public can enjoy it at their leisure. Now those who decide to sell it will have their prices very low and often be found giving out copies tons of copies for free because they would rather a stranger read it than they receive any sort of cash payment for it. The reward is found in being told their work was good and shown appreciation for the opportunity to read it at little to no cost.

*A business is something gearing to make money from the get-go and typically run by a pre-set plan. An artist who takes their work and turns it into a business must develop and use the mind of a business person. There are marketing strategies brewing, routine schedules make and put into immediate use, constant book ideas being jotted down. What works better, what doesn't? They will certainly find out.

You can classify as any one of these, or any mix of the three, and it is perfectly fine. There is no wrong way to go about writing and distributing (or not as the case may be) your work. Which is why this term "sell outs" is so mind boggling. Writing simply is, there are no bad ideas just as there are no more original ideas. You can have a unique spin on it that will make it yours but lets face it, every storyline possible has already been done- and that is perfectly fine! We, the readers, love them!
We want them!
Give them to us! (Please.)

I'm going to quote some remarks I've seen around (no names added, I'm not that kind of a person) and break down exactly why I find these comments to be utterly confusing, if not irritating:

"God, would you look at her? She is totally selling out just to make sales."
If they enjoy that genre, why wouldn't they write about it? Passion or hobby, the money doesn't matter. They were simply inspired by a fantastic book and wanted to do their own take on the genre. Now if they are doing it for the money please explain to me how that is wrong? Self publishing is a business and most of those authors are trying to help support themselves on their work. There is nothing wrong with following a trend to help that cause out. If you own a clothing store and only sold sundresses but those weren't selling, wouldn't you change to something else to help sell your merchandise? You need the income to survive and there is absolutely (I can't seem to stress this enough) NOTHING wrong with that!

"She is coming out with an MC book, how cute. She was writing paranormal before it, wonder what made her change her mind? Couldn't be the sales, could it? Gasp."
I take this one personally because when I write I jump all around the genre spectrum. I don't believe in limiting myself to one thing and thanks to the self publishing option I don't have to. If an idea comes to an author it comes with a drive, an urge, a push, that makes the idea seem one number on a list of priorities. Even if it isn't completed or published publicly, it HAS to be written. Muses do not care what trends and what doesn't.

"What a sell out! Her cover isn't even that attractive and I bet she doesn't know what she is writing. She's just doing it to follow the crowd."
I'll let you in on a little secret- a lot of authors BS their way through their books. All you need is a little grain of truth for it to hook someone in and then the rest rarely matters. Now please take into consideration that there are somethings that this should not apply to because you may insult someone. I have a friend who lives the BDSM lifestyle and finds a lot of these books to be an insult to herself, her husband, and her other friends in the community. I know another friend who was raped, so seeing a rape victim wrongly played out, or even glorified in some of these dark eroticas, insults her and scares her. This is why a lot of authors research the current topic in their WIPs before putting it out in the world. Unless you know for a fact that the author did absolutely no research by checking their computers history or getting a confession, the comment above is irrelevant and flat out rude.

I could keep going on but it would basically be the same thing repeated over and over. In my opinions "sell outs" don't exist. The term is a glimpse at the person who said it, not the person it was directed at. If you want to write fan-fic, then write fan-fic. If you want to write something weird and unusual, then write something weird and unusual. If you want to write what is currently trending, then do it baby!
You can't write something you don't want to write. The project will completely fail. So don't worry about the comments and remarks on your choice, do whatever your heart- or muse- tells you to do.

And please, for the love of everything literature, lets get rid of this ridiculous, pointless term and get back to focusing on what really matters- the next book in our lives. ♥

Dom Wars The Final Round by Lucian Bane & Aden Lowe

Release Date August 13, 2014

BDSM Erotic Romance

Add to Goodreads
Synopsis:
*RECOMMENDED FOR AGES EIGHTEEN AND UP DUE TO EXPLICIT SEXUAL SITUATIONS, AND STRONG LANGUAGE When Gladiator Inc, an adult toy company expands their market to familiarize the ‘vanilla’ world with the elements of BDSM, the result is a pay-per-view reality show with video feeds streamed live to subscribers. The show, Dom Wars, is a competition to determine the Top Dom that will become the spokesperson for the company. The contestants all wear cameras to film every moment and angle of the competition, while they complete various challenges to determine who has ultimately Dominated various elements of themselves. The hero and heroine of the series, Lucian Bane and Tara Reese, have barely made it into the Sixth and Final Round of Dom Wars. This week-long Survival Round will determine the Top Dom, once and for all. The contestants are taken to an uninhabited island, where they will have to cross formidable jungle terrain. First Dom to reach the boat anchored on the other side of the island wins the million dollars and the title. Seems simple. Except Lucian’s old adversary, the Sadist Jase Duff from Round One, has been tasked with making sure none of the five teams make it to the boat. If he is successful, he wins the prize, only it's not money that Jase Duff cares about, its revenge on Lucian and Tara. And his sadistic need to inflict pain makes it game on.

About the Authors:

Lucian Bane:
My name is Lucian Bane, and I'm an Ineffable Dom. That just means, do yourself a favor and please don't try to fit me into categories. Complicated Dom, Intricate Dom, or Confounding Dom work too. I don't want a woman I can break, or overpower, or exercise my dominance over. I want a woman I can come undone with. I want a woman I can lose myself in. I think there are many men like myself, and I hope my writing will be a map for them. (And women, to let them know Doms like this exist.) I want to challenge men to go for the complete power exchange with a woman, but don't be a coward and not give the same that they demand or expect. Consider that when you give one hundred percent of yourself to a person, there is no more of you to give away. You now belong to them the way they belong to you. Inner Doms need a master to train them. I once bowed to my Dom's reckless and tireless desires, but when I gained control, he bowed to my will. The transformation made me into what I am today. What many would call an Ineffable Dom. But its equal term in the Vanilla world, in my opinion, is a real man.
Fun Facts about Lucian…
  1. I love salt and vinegar chips
  2. I love coffee
  3. I hate liver
  4. I love the lonesome cry of locusts at dusk
  5. I love antiques
  6. I want to live off the land, in the mountains in a remote cabin with Tara and our future family
  7. I love the smell of Pine Sol
  8. Love the smell of a campfire

  10. I love swimming in a cold river
  11. I love sleeping with a box fan on (lol old habit)
Aden Lowe:
As an English major in college, I took a summer job as a proofreader for a small town newspaper, and got hooked on editing. I also worked my way through college training horses. After graduation, I landed a job for a small independent editing firm, and stayed there for 15 yrs. An old friend, Lucian, approached me to edit his special fiction project, and I got hooked. After an insane few months editing his Dom Wars series for him, Lucian convinced me I should try my hand at writing as well. I’m his co-author for Round Six, the final Dom Wars installment, and we will co-write the White Knight Academy series as well. And in Sept 2014, I’ll release my debut solo work, an Erotic Western with BDSM elements, “Big Game: A Hunted Love Novella”. In addition, I have a military series in the planning stages.
Fun Facts about Aden...
  1. Might, or might not, have bad dreams about penguins.
  2. Had no idea who Justin Bieber was until a few days ago when Wheels enlightened me and changed my life forever. Not.
  3. Until recently, hadn’t gone to see a movie at the theater since “The Horse Whisperer”. I’m not happy about sitting in the dark with that many strangers.
  4. Loves babysitting the neighbors Little Doms, except when they’re flushing my bathroom rug, or doing something worse.
  5. Drinks a mixture of coffee and hot cocoa instead of coffee.
  6. Not into sports – balls aren’t intended to be hit, batted, kicked, thrown, or otherwise abused.
  7. Lived up to a lifelong goal of making a woman wet her panties… just not in the intended way ;)
  8. According to a certain Little Domme’s mom, big hands and feet mean big other things. And everybody knows moms know EVERYTHING.
  9. Has a horse named Joe. Why Joe? Because it’s far easier to say “Joe, you bastard, you bite me and I’ll take your head off” than “Stardust Lucky Bastard, you bastard, you…”
  10. ADEN IS NOT: 1. Afraid of bugs 2. Innocent 3. Sweet 4. A clean freak (Just can’t stand NOT clean) 5. A workaholic (OK, that one’s a fib) 6. A good liar 7. Intimidated by children who aren’t the Little Doms next door. 8. A Momma’s Boy (Close to and protective of Mom is different) 9. Unlikely to shoot a criminal coming through the front door 10. Above kicking a fool’s ass, literally or figuratively.

Just... Breath

Excerpt from Just…Breathe Book 1 The Broken Series
I was standing outside the restaurant with tears filling my eyes and my hand was throbbing. I have never hit a man so hard but he had touched a nerve. I am not a gold digger. That was my mom and sister, not me.
‘I have got to get out of here, but how?’ I wondered. I arrived with Lori and I cannot walk home dressed like this, I will surly get raped. Yet, I do not have the money for a cab. Maybe Lori will come out and give me a ride home, seeing as I was not going to go back in there and face that, that man! ‘Such a terrible ending to an already fucked up day,’ I thought once more. How wrong I was as it was not over yet.
“Jaden?” My body stiffened. I knew that voice. It was Steven, my ex-boyfriend.
“Steven, just leave me alone,” I demanded. Steven reached out and placed his hand on my shoulder and I shook him off.
“Come on babe,” he said. “You can’t still be pissed at me.” Steven took a step towards me.
“I believe the lady asked you to leave,” Chase said as he approached them, and then he turned to me. “I’m sorry I kept you waiting sweetheart.” I looked up stunned at him and saw the evidence of my anger on his left cheek.
Steven looked at him in disgust. "Who the hell are you?" he demanded to know. "Lord knows Jaden could never snag anyone like you."
I saw an idea form in Chase's eyes and he put his arm around me. I stiffened. "As a matter of fact, she has," Chase admitted with a sly smile. Steven’s eyes grew wide.
He smiled. "Well good luck buddy,” he chuckled. "You obviously haven’t had her between the sheets yet or you wouldn't be standing here. She's clumsy and a cold fish." Chase's eyes flashed red.
"Although our sex life is none of your business," Chase growled, "Perhaps all she needed was a real man as a partner." I chuckled then as anger flashed across Steven’s face, Chase squeezed my shoulder as he looked down at me. "Are you ready to leave sweetheart?" I nodded, as I was lost for words.
"Well, whatever man," Steven said. "I have a rich babe waiting for me." Then he walked away.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “He’s gone,” I whispered. “You can stop pretending and let me go.”
Chase dropped his arm to his side. “I was only trying to help,” he said. “I’m sorry about before.”
I looked up into his eyes not able to gauge if he was being truthful with me. I could see that his eye was swelling and there was a nasty bruise forming on his face along with a cut from the ring I wore. My heart skipped a beat.
“Thank you for helping,” I said. “As for what happened inside, I’ll get back to you on that. Have a seat on the bench. I need to take a look at your face.”
A confused look appeared on his face, but he did as instructed. Once sitting he asked, “That bad is it?” I studied his eye and cheek without answering.
Reaching up, I lightly touched his skin, Chase closed his eyes, flinching and I jumped. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” His eyes opened and something flashes in them, but I quickly looked away as I rummaged for the wipes and bandage I kept in my purse.
I saw him eyeing my right hand as it had also started to swell. I pulled out a towelett packet and a small bottle of ointment. I proceeded to wipe his cheek and he closed his eyes again. I could see by his face that it hurt like hell to be touched, but he did not stop me.
I searched his face as I wiped it clean and a burning fire started deep in my bones. I have never had this kind of reaction to a guy and it scared me.
He opened his eyes and I saw they reflected what I was feeling. ‘This is crazy,’ I thought as I placed that ointment over the cut my ring had made. He watched as I put the items away and placed a bandage on the cut.
He reached for my hand. “You’re hurt too,” he said with a husky tone and turned my hand to inspect it.
“It’s, it’s nothing,” I stammered. “I’ll be fine.” I tried to pull my hand away but he was too strong.
Chase looked into my eyes. “Don’t be silly,” he whispered. “It’s my turn to take care of you.” My eyes grew wide as he brought my hand to his lips and he kissed across my knuckles around to my palm, as his eyes never left mine.
I gasped for air. ‘I should stop this,’ I thought. ‘I should stop this now.’ But it felt so good and it had been so long since a man had shown me any real attention. He continued to kiss along my palm and placed one last kiss on the inside of my wrist. ‘This stuff doesn’t just happen. True love, affection, and romance were just a fairy tale.’ The thought brought me back to my senses and when I pulled my hand, he let me go.
“I’ve got to go,” I said breathlessly and rushed off.
“Shit!” I heard him say. “Jaden, wait.” I pretended that I had not heard him as I continued to run off.
I felt him grab my arm bringing me to a dead stop. I spun around on him.
“Why in the hell can’t you leave me alone?” I screamed at him. “You have insulted me and humiliated me all in the span of a day. Go away, Mr. Daniels.”
“Where did you park the company car?” he asked ignoring what I said.
“First of all, this is pleasure not business so it would have been wrong of me to use it,” I spat out. “Second, if you must know, it is back at the office.”
“Why didn’t you take it when you left today?” he questioned.
I could feel my blood boil more. “Again, if you must know, I don’t have a license and I don’t know how to drive,” I fumed.
I watched as shock replaced the anger on his face. “But you’re 26 and you can’t drive?” he asked in confusion.
Now feeling ashamed, I felt the blush creep across my skin. I looked down at the sidewalk and whispered, “My mom never taught me and my dad…well he wasn’t there.” Then I shrugged.
He lifted my face to his. “With the way you look in that dress you will get yourself rapped if you try walking. Let’s go.” He took my hand, but I refused to move. “You will either walk back to my car or I will throw you over my shoulder and carry you back.” I shook his hand off and crossed my arms over my chest in defiance. I heard him blow out a breath. “Ok, you asked for it.” Before I was able to react, he lifted me. He flung me over his shoulder, and was walking back to the car park.
I started beating his back with my fists. “Put me down,” I demanded as the anger built inside me again. “Stop man handling me, Chase.” He chuckled, but ignored my protests and continued to his car. I finally gave up, as I was defenseless against this man’s strength.
Once we were standing next to his car he asked, “If I put you down are you going to run away?” I refused to answer this infuriating man. “Jaden?”
“Fine,” I finally answered. “No, I will not run away.” Chase chuckled again and placed me on the ground. I swayed as I attempted to gain my footing. True to my word I did not run. He held the car door open and I slid in. He shut it, then made his way to the driver’s side and got in.
He started the engine and pulled out into traffic. We drove for a while before it dawned on me that he hadn’t asked for my address. “Are we going to drive around all night or are you going to ask where I live?” I asked.
He shrugged. “Don’t need to,” he said. “I already know.”
I gasped. “How,” I whispered. “Have you checked up on me?”
He shrugged again. “After you left my office today I pulled your background,” he admitted. “It’s standard procedure when I hire. Besides, what can I say, I needed to know,” he said quietly. I turned back to stare out the windshield.
“Well, after tonight, you can forget I ever existed,” I said.
“That may be harder than you think,” he mumbled. I felt the same way.
We drove through the seedy neighborhood and pulled up in front of my apartment. He got out of the car, walked around to my side and opened the door. I stepped out and Larry, my neighbor, walked up.
“Hey babe, how you doing tonight?” Larry asked in his drunken voice.
“Larry, I’m not in the mood for your shit tonight, go home,” I pleaded. As Larry went to reach for me, Chase stepped forward.
“I believe she said to back off, Larry,” he spat out. Larry jumped back.
“Sorry man,” he stuttered. “I didn’t know she had a boyfriend.” Then he stumbled away.
“You can leave,” I said. “Keep your word, Chase. You said once I was home you would be out of my life.” Being out of his life filled me with dread. ‘I really need to get a hold of myself.’ I thought.
“Yes, that is what I said,” he said. “But you are still standing on the sidewalk and not safe in your apartment. What about the job?”
I let my breath out. I had forgotten the job. “Fine,” I said and stalked off towards the building. I stopped, sensing he was not with me, and turned back. “Well, are you coming or not?” Chase jumped and started to follow me.
“Well, we’re here,” I said stopping outside my door.
“What about work?” he asked again. “You can’t walk out on me.”
I snapped my face up to his. The words he spoke held a heavy meaning and what Sandy had said came back to haunt me.
“Jaden, you have to understand that Chase has had some heartbreak in his life. He doesn’t trust too many people, especially women,” she had said.
I searched his eyes for any indication to what he is feeling and saw a glimpse of a shadow; doubt, uncertainty, in himself, or in me? I was not sure. Whatever it was, it was tugging at my heart.
“Yes, I still plan to work for you,” I reassured him in a small weak voice.
I wasn’t prepared when Chase moved so I didn’t react immediately. He leaned down and placed a soft quick kiss on my lips. “Goodnight, Jaden,” he whispered. “Thank you.”
I nodded and let myself through the door and closed it. I leaned back, closing my eyes.
Why did this man affect me so much? He was arrogant, yes, but I saw a tender side of him tonight. The way he had kissed and taken care of my hand, no man had ever shown me that kind of…of what? Love? I just cannot put her finger on it.
That kiss, however brief it was, lit a fire inside me. I opened my eyes, pushed myself away from the door. “No, I will not think about him again. Not until I have to deal with him at work. Then I will be too busy learning the job,” I said aloud as I walked to my bedroom to change and went to bed.
I rolled over and wiped the tears away. I prayed that my heart will come away from this unscratched.

Practical Advice for Beginning Fiction (or other genre) Writers

Joining us today is author Michelle Rabe to discuss writing.

There are a lot of writing how-to books which are going to give the beginning writer advice, and a lot of the books will contradict one another. One book might suggest writing in the morning and another the evening. Like almost all creative pursuits you’re going to find almost as many pieces of advice about how to write as you will writers. There are a few things that I think every new writer should be doing and those are what I’m going to talk about today.
The first thing that I believe every beginning writer should be doing is reading a lot.Only through lots of reading will the new author learn why certain things work and others don’t. The young writer will see how other authors are doing things and will either decide that’s how they want to do things or sometimes more importantly how they don’t want to do things. The new writer will also get an idea for different genres and points of view, how back story is handled, description and dialogue.
The young writer also needs to write a lot. The more you write, the more you figure out how you tell stories. Writing also gets your mind, body and imagination used to the process of writing. While writing isn’t tough physical labor it does take discipline to sit in front of a blank screen or piece of paper and pour out bits of your soul on to disk or page. It is emotionally and mentally difficult and getting into a routine of writing in the same place at roughly the same time every day is a lot like working out. The more you do it the easier it becomes.
Get honest feedback from people that you trust. There are a lot of people who will tell you that friends and family are the worst people to ask for feedback on your work but I’m not one of them. I consider every person in my writing group a friend and I get their feedback all the time. My harshest critic is my mom, she reads a lot and calls me on it when I’ve taken the easy way out. The important thing is to choose people whose opinions you trust and who are readers.
Perhaps the most important and, seemingly ignored, piece of advice I have is that real writers revise. No first draft is perfect, there are always going to be changes that need to be made, typos that need to be rooted out and plot holes that need to be filled. Part of growing as a writer is learning to take editorial notes without letting your ego get in the way. Even though I’d been through the manuscript of Cast in Blood several times and so had my writing group I still hired an editor (Kathy Lapeyre) and she caught errors that had been missed. She also saw repetition of words and phrases that when revised made the book stronger.

I have two final pieces of advice. The first is to have a thick skin, there are going to be people who don’t like your work. They may even make suggestions on how to fix it based on their tastes. Sometimes their advice is good, most of the time it’s not. Use your judgment on which feedback to listen to and which to ignore. The last piece of advice is to have fun. I’ve found that writing is at its best and easiest (well it’s never really easy) when you’re enjoying yourself and telling your story. So, have fun and see where the story takes you … you may be surprised.

Thank you so much for being here! I don't know about anyone else but this is certainly eye opening for me.
